Behind Every Diagnosis Is a Story: One Year of Strength Happens Podcast

One year ago, Janine and I hit "publish" on the very first episode of Strength Happens. If we're being completely honest, we had no idea what we were doing.
We knew we had stories to tell. We knew there were lessons we had learned through raising children with complex medical needs that might help other families. We knew there were conversations happening behind hospital doors, in waiting rooms, and around kitchen tables that deserved to be heard.
What we didn't know was anything about podcasting. Our early episodes were a little all over the place. We would start on one topic and somehow end up somewhere completely different. We were learning microphones, editing software, recording platforms, and all the technology that comes with producing a podcast. As two middle-aged moms, there were plenty of moments where we questioned whether we could actually figure it all out.

There were recording mishaps, editing mistakes, and more than a few times when we found ourselves asking, "Now what button do I click?" But we kept showing up.
Now, more than 20 episodes later, we've learned so much. Our conversations are more focused. Our editing is better. The technology doesn't feel quite as intimidating. We've found our rhythm as co-hosts and storytellers. Yet when we look back over this first year, the thing we're most proud of isn't how much we've improved technically.
It's that we've never lost sight of why we started. From day one, Strength Happens has been about creating community.
It's for the parents sitting beside hospital beds. The caregivers managing medications, therapies, appointments, and endless paperwork. The families navigating diagnoses they never expected and futures they never imagined. It's for the people who sometimes feel isolated in a journey that can be incredibly lonely.

We wanted to create a space where those families could hear, "Me too." A place where they could find understanding, encouragement, and connection.
At the same time, we wanted to open a window for healthcare professionals. Through our stories and the stories of our guests, we've tried to share the human side of medicine...the realities that exist long after a patient leaves the clinic or hospital.
Behind every diagnosis is a child. Behind every treatment plan is a family. Behind every chart is a story.
Our hope has always been that by sharing those stories, healthcare professionals can better understand the lived experiences of the patients and caregivers they serve.
Over the past year, we've been humbled by the messages we've received from parents, advocates, healthcare providers, and listeners around the world. We've heard from people who felt seen, understood, and less alone because of a conversation they heard on the podcast. Those moments remind us why this work matters.

As we celebrate one year of Strength Happens, we're filled with gratitude. Gratitude for every listener who has joined us, every guest who has trusted us with their story, and every family who continues to show incredible strength in the face of challenges.
We still don't have everything figured out. We still laugh at our mistakes. We still learn something new with every episode. But one year in, we're more convinced than ever that stories matter.

Stories connect us.
Stories teach us.
Stories build community.
And as long as there are stories to tell, Janine and I will keep showing up, hitting record, and sharing them.
Thank you for being part of this journey.
Here's to Year Two.

So proud and humbled to be able to do this journey together.
